How we did the Search Positioning Analysis

We started off with one keyword that customers might use to find a service, for this article, we selected: Swindon accountants. We use the location name Swindon to narrow down the field to local results.

Next we added related keywords (that customers might use to find Swindon accountants) and searched using a tool called serprobot.com, to identify where local accountants rank.

If you check you’ll see that that their websites are well built with plenty of good content and search optimised. We are looking for a partnership with one local accountancy firm, aiming to break into the results above.

Research Your Competitors

Once you establish your own rank position for a range of keywords, take a look at competitor websites ranking in front of you to identify what they are doing and proceed to implement similar solutions for your own website.

So, for the 57 accountants we checked, only 14 of them appeared in the top 5 for the selected keywords; and what about the other 43. Unfortunately, they will be getting very little organic traffic from search.

The phenomenon where smaller firms face significant challenges in outranking larger competitors in search engine results, is sometimes referred to as Search Engine Inequality or Small Business Visibility Gap.

A workaround is to understand the importance of implementing targeted SEO efforts, including long-tail keywords, local SEO tactics, and niche specialization. Just to give an example, instead of optimising for Swindon Accountant, optimise for West Swindon Accountant, or Swindon Accountant Tax Return. There are so many keyword combinations, big firms can’t have it all their own way.

Why are some Swindon Accountants Ranked Poorly?

Without wishing to name accounting firms that perform poorly in search rankings, the reasons for low rankings are clear from a quick analysis: inadequate keyword optimization, low-quality content, insufficient backlinks, poor page structure, slow hosting etc. Inconsistent business information at online profiles and websites that perform badly on mobile devices can also contribute to diminished search rankings.
